Description
Bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections. It is available by prescription only.
Bactrim comes in oral tablets containing 80 mg trimethoprim and 400 mg sulfamethoxazole.
Directions
Take Bactrim exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Be sure to finish the full course of treatment, even if you start to feel better.
Your doctor will determine an appropriate dose and treatment duration for you based on your health conditions and the infection being treated.
Ingredients
Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole are the active ingredients in Bactrim.
Contraindications
Patients with any of the following should not take Bactrim:
- An allergy to sulfonamides or to any of the ingredients in Bactrim
- Babies who are younger than 2 months old
- Decreased kidney function (CrCl <15 mL/min)
- Severe liver problems
- Pregnant women at term and nursing
- History of drug-induced immune thrombocytopenia (decreased platelet count) with the use of trimethoprim and/or sulfonamides
- Are taking dofetilide
Cautions
- Before you start treatment with Bactrim, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Severe low sodium levels in the blood can occur.
- High potassium levels in the blood can occur.
- Severe and potentially life-threatening reactions can occur, including Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) and acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis (AFND), fulminant liver necrosis, abnormal white blood cell counts, aplastic anemia, and other blood disorders. Immediately contact your doctor if you have a rash or other serious reaction.
- Acute and delayed lung damage, anaphylaxis, and circulatory shock have occurred with Bactrim use.
- Severe pulmonary reactions have occurred with Bactrim use.
- Elderly patients should use Bactrim with caution due to the risk of bone marrow suppression.
- Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea can occur.
- Prolonged or inappropriate use of Bactrim may lead to superinfection.
- Caution should be used in patients with kidney or liver problems, possible folate deficiency, porphyria, thyroid problems, and severe allergies or asthma.
- Rarely, low blood sugar has occurred in non-diabetic patients.
- Trimethoprim may affect the metabolism of phenylalanine.
Side Effects
Anorexia, vomiting, vertigo, seizure, rash, hives, abnormal white blood cell counts, sulfite sensitivity, and abnormal electrolyte levels are some Bactrim side effects. However, these are not all the side effects that can occur. Contact your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
