What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

    Use Azarga exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Carefully read the medication guide that comes with your prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.

    Recommended dosing: Shake the bottle before using. Do not let the tip of the dropper touch any surface in order to prevent contamination. Place one drop into the affected eye(s) two times a day.

    Remove contact lenses before using. You may put them back in 15 minutes after Azarga administration. If you are using other eye products, they should be given at least 5 minutes apart; eye ointments should be administered last.

    Keep the eye drops out of reach of children.

    Properly dispose of the eye drops after 4 weeks of opening.

    Ingredients

    The active ingredients in Azarga are brinzolamide and timolol.

    Inactive ingredients include benzalkonium chloride, carbopol 974P, disodium edetate, mannitol (E421), purified water, sodium chloride, tyloxapol, hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide. Tiny amounts of hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide are added to balance pH.

    Contraindications

    Azarga eye drops should not be used in patients with:

    • An allergy to any of Azarga’s ingredients, beta-blockers, or sulphonamides
    • Reactive airway disease such as bronchial asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
    • Low heart rate or certain heart problems, including heart failure, cardiogenic shock, sick sinus syndrome, sino-atrial block, or second or third degree atrioventricular block that is not managed with a pacemaker
    • Allergic rhinitis that is severe
    • Kidney problems that are severe
    • Hyperchloremic acidosis

    Cautions

    • Before you begin using Azarga, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, including other eye products
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Systemic effects can occur due to the absorption of brinzolamide and timolol.
    • Hypersensitivity reactions, including severe skin reactions, can occur. Seek emergency care right away if you develop symptoms.
    • Patients with heart problems or vascular disorders should use Azarga with caution.
    • Signs of hyperthyroidism may be masked.
    • Muscle weakness can occur.
    • Respiratory problems, including death associated with bronchospasm in asthmatic patients, can occur; therefore, patients with respiratory problems should use Azarga with caution. The medication should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks.
    • Patients with spontaneous low blood glucose levels or diabetes should use Azarga with caution, as the medication can mask the signs and symptoms of low blood glucose.
    • Azarga contains the sulphonamide brinzolamide, which can cause side effects, including acid-base disturbances. Patients at risk for kidney problems should use Azarga with caution due to the risk of metabolic acidosis.
    • Mental alertness may be impaired.
    • Anaphylactic reactions can occur, especially in patients who have had atopy or a history of severe anaphylactic reactions to various allergens.
    • Choroidal detachment can occur.
    • Before undergoing procedures with anesthesia, inform your doctor and anesthesiologist that you are being treated with Azarga.
    • Eye dryness can occur. Caution should be used in patients who have corneal diseases.
    • Patients with severe liver problems should use Azarga with caution.

    Side Effects

    Eye inflammation, blurred vision, eye irritation, eye pain, decreased heart rate, and altered taste are common side effects associated with Azarga; however, other side effects may also occur. Immediately inform your doctor of any side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
