Description
Aviane contains levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol to prevent pregnancy in women who desire oral contraceptives as their birth control method.
Aviane is available in oral tablets (21-day or 28-day regimen).
Directions
Take Aviane as instructed by your doctor. Read the information that comes with your prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have.
Ingredients
The 21 orange tablets contain 0.10 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol. Inactive ingredients include FD&C yellow no. 6 aluminum lake, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized corn starch, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide.
The light green, inert tablets contain D&C yellow no. 10 aluminum lake, FD&C blue no. 1 aluminum lake, FD&C yellow no. 6 aluminum lake, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and pregelatinized corn starch.
Contraindications
Women with any of the following should not take Aviane:
- Blood clots or blood clotting disorders
- A history of blood clots or blood clotting disorders
- Current or past history of cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease
- Vascular heart disease with blood clotting complications
- Heart rhythm problems with blood clotting disorders
- Hereditary or acquired condition in which your blood clots easily
- Major surgery in which you will be immobile for a long period of time
- Diabetes with vascular involvement
- Headaches that cause focal neurological symptoms
- High blood pressure that is uncontrolled
- Current or a history of breast cancer
- Undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice before Aviane use
- Liver tumors, liver cancer, or liver disease
- Pregnant or suspect being pregnant
- An allergy to any of Aviane’s ingredients
Women who are on hepatitis C medications containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir, should not take Aviane.
Cautions
- Aviane contains the following Boxed Warning:
- Smoking cigarettes increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from using oral contraceptives. The risk increases with age and with smoking at least 15 cigarettes a day. Women older than 35 years of age are especially at risk. Women who take oral contraceptives should avoid smoking.
- Before you begin taking Aviane, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
- Your allergies
- Your current health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Oral contraceptives can increase the risk of heart attack, blood clots, cerebrovascular disease, breast cancer, and cervical cancer.
- Oral contraceptives may cause liver tumors and vision problems and may worsen gallbladder disease.
- Liver enzymes may increase with the combination of Aviane and hepatitis C regimens that contain ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir. Aviane should be stopped before starting hepatitis C treatment with these medications and may be resumed 2 weeks after completing hepatitis C treatment.
- Oral contraceptives can cause glucose intolerance, lipid disorders, and high blood pressure.
- Oral contraceptives can cause or worsen headaches or migraines.
- Oral contraceptives can cause breakthrough bleeding, spotting, or abnormal menstruation.
- Ectopic pregnancy or intrauterine pregnancy can occur in contraceptive failures.
- Oral contraceptives do not prevent sexually transmitted diseases or HIV (AIDS).
Side Effects
Aviane side effects include acne, abnormal menstruation, breast changes, intolerance to contact lenses, vision problems, nausea, mood changes, and weight changes; however, other side effects can also occur. Tell your doctor right away if you have side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
