Description
Auryxia (Ferric Citrate) is a phosphate binder and iron replacement product. It is known chemically as ferric citrate and works by binding phosphate in the digestive tract. This action helps reduce phosphate levels in the blood. Healthcare providers often prescribe Auryxia for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to manage hyperphosphatemia or iron deficiency anemia.
Directions
The starting dosage is typically one or two pills three times a day with meals, depending on the condition being treated. The dosage may be gradually increased to a maximum dosage of 12 tablets per day. It’s important to swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew or crush them, as this can cause discoloration of the mouth and teeth.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Auryxia is Ferric Citrate.
Contraindications
Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:
- Iron overload syndromes (e.g., hemochromatosis)
- Known allergies to ferric citrate or any other component in Auryxia
- Existing conditions that cause high levels of iron in the blood
Cautions
- Before starting treatment with Auryxia, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
- Any medical conditions you currently have
- Any allergies
- All medications you are currently taking
- Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Auryxia can lead to significant increases in iron levels. Monitor iron levels like serum ferritin and TSAT before and during treatment. If you're receiving intravenous iron, you might need to adjust its dosage or stop it altogether due to Auryxia's iron content.
- Auryxia can be extremely dangerous if ingested by children. There have been cases of fatal poisoning in children under six from accidental iron ingestion. Keep Auryxia out of reach of children to avoid accidental ingestion and overdose.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Auryxia include diarrhea, changes in stool color, nausea, constipation, vomiting, and sometimes coughing. These effects are usually manageable but can be uncomfortable.
While rare, Auryxia can cause serious issues such as high potassium levels, which might affect heart health. It may also lead to severe gastrointestinal problems that could lead to discontinuation of the medication. If you experience severe side effects like intense stomach pain or persistent gastrointestinal problems, it's important to seek medical attention immediately. These serious conditions are uncommon but need prompt medical evaluation.
