Description
Auralgan (antipyrine, benzocaine and glycerin dehydrated) prescription ear drops are used to help remove ear wax and are used with other medications to treat middle ear infections. However, this medication has been discontinued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because antipyrine/benzocaine-containing products “have not been proven to be safe and effective.”

Directions
Auralgan should be used as directed by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
When using Auralgan for ear wax removal, insert enough solution to fill the affected ear canal. Use three times a day for 2 to 3 days before removing ear wax.
When using Auralgan for middle ear infections, insert enough solution to fill the affected ear canal. Repeat every 1 to 2 hours until relief of congestion and pain is experienced.
After inserting the ear drops, moisten a cotton pledget with the solution and insert it into the opening of the ear.
To minimize contamination, avoid touching the ear dropper to any surface, including the ear.
Store Auralgan at room temperature and away from light.
Ingredients
Antipyrine and benzocaine are the active ingredients in Auralgan. Auralgan also contains glycerin dehydrated.
Contraindications
Do not use Auralgan if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Do not use Auralgan if you have spontaneous perforation of the tympanic membrane.
Cautions
- Before you begin treatment with Auralgan, tell your doctor about:
- All the medications you use, including other ear drops or ear wax removal products
- Your allergies
- Your health problems and past medical history
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Auralgan drops are for use in the ear only.
- Auralgan’s safety and efficacy in children under two years of age has not been established.
Side Effects
Stinging and burning in the ear or ear redness can occur with Auralgan. However, these are not the only side effects that can occur. Immediately notify your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
