What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

    Description

    Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide) extended-release tablets are prescribed for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Aplenzin is an antidepressant.

    Aplenzin is available in 174 mg, 348 mg, and 522 mg extended-release tablets for oral administration.

    Directions

    Take Aplenzin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your treatment regimen, including an appropriate Aplenzin dosage, will be determined by your doctor depending on the condition being treated and your liver and kidney function.

    Store Aplenzin tablets at 25°C (77°F).

    Ingredients

    The active ingredient in Aplenzin is bupropion hydrobromide.

    Inactive ingredients include ethylcellulose, glyceryl behenate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, povidone, and dibutyl sebacate. The 174 mg and 348 mg tablets also contain carnauba wax.

    Contraindications

    Aplenzin should not be administered to patients with any of the following conditions:

    • Seizure disorder
    • Active or prior bulimia or anorexia nervosa diagnosis
    • Known allergy to any of the ingredients in Aplenzin

    Aplenzin should not be administered to patients who are undergoing abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or antiepileptic drugs.

    Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) intended to treat psychiatric disorders should not be taken with Aplenzin or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI intended to treat psychiatric disorders.

    Aplenzin should not be started in patients receiving treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue.

    Cautions

    • Aplenzin contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:
      • The risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults receiving antidepressants is increased. Patients should be monitored for worsening and development of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
    • Before you begin treatment with Aplenzin, consult your doctor about the following:
      • All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Aplenzin contains the following warnings and precautions:
      • Mood changes, psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, homicidal ideation, aggression, hostility, agitation, anxiety, panic, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, and suicide are neuropsychiatric adverse events that have occurred during smoking cessation. Patients who are trying to quit smoking and are taking Aplenzin should be monitored for these adverse events and immediately contact a healthcare provider if they experience any of these events.
      • Dose-related seizure risk
      • High blood pressure
      • Mania/hypomania activation; patients should be screened for bipolar disorder and monitored for these symptoms
      • Psychosis and other neuropsychiatric reactions; if these occur, patients should immediately contact a healthcare provider
      • Angle-closure glaucoma

    Side Effects

    Dry mouth, nausea, sleep problems, dizziness, sore throat, abdominal pain, agitation, anxiety, tremor, palpitation, sweating, ringing of the ears, muscle pain, anorexia, urinary frequency, and rash are the most common Aplenzin side effects; however, other side effects may also occur.
