What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Contraindications

Patients who are undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery should not take systemic flurbiprofen for pain due to increased risk for heart attack or stroke.

    Cautions

    • Ansaid (flurbiprofen) contains the following Boxed Warning:
      • Long-term treatment with flurbiprofen can result in gastritis, ulceration with or without gastrointestinal (GI) perforation, and/or GI bleeding, which can happen at any time, many times without preceding symptoms. If possible, flurbiprofen should not be administered to patients who have had or currently have a GI disease, including peptic ulcer disease, ulcerative colitis, or GI bleeding. Patients who take NSAIDs and have had peptic ulcer disease or GI bleeding have greater than a 10-fold increased risk for developing a GI bleed compared with those who do not have either risk factor. The risk for GI bleeding associated with NSAIDs is higher in patients who are receiving chemotherapy that suppresses the bone marrow, corticosteroids, anticoagulants (blood thinners), or who smoke, are elderly, or have alcoholism. Regular monitoring should occur in all patients receiving long-term treatment with NSAIDs, and alternative options should be considered.
      • High blood pressure may worsen or occur, congestive heart failure may worsen, and the risk for serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, heart attack, and stroke (which can be fatal) may be increased with the use of all NSAIDs, including systemic use of flurbiprofen. There can be a risk for heart attack or stroke as early as the first weeks of taking an NSAID. The risk may increase with higher doses and longer use. Using NSAIDs also increases the risk of heart failure. If patients experience any signs or symptoms of a cardiovascular event, they should seek medical attention right away.
      • Patients who are undergoing a CABG surgery should not take systemic flurbiprofen for pain due to increased risk for heart attack or stroke.
    • Before you begin treatment with Ansaid (flurbiprofen), talk to your doctor about:
      • All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbals
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
