What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Your doctor will determine an appropriate dosage for you based on your age, your laboratory tests, the condition being treated/prevented, and your tolerance and response to the medication.

Ask your doctor about different treatment options, including Adthyza and armour thyroid.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding Adthyza therapy, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

    Storing Adthyza:

Keep Adthyza between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F) and out of reach of children.

    Ingredients

The active ingredients in Adthyza are tetraiodothyronine sodium (T4 levothyroxine) and triiodothyronine sodium (T3 liothyronine). Inactive ingredients include calcium stearate, colloidal silicon dioxide, dextrose, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium starch glycolate.

    Contraindications

Patients with the following conditions should not take Adthyza:

    • Diagnosed uncorrected adrenal cortical insufficiency
    • Untreated thyrotoxicosis
    • An allergy to any of Adthyza’s ingredients

In addition, using thyroid hormones for obesity–alone or with other medications–has not been justified nor shown to work and has not been justified for treating male or female infertility unless the patient is diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

    Cautions

    • Adthyza contains the following warning:
      • Medications with thyroid hormone mechanisms–alone or with other medications–have been used to treat obesity. However, in patients with a normal functioning thyroid gland, daily hormonal requirement doses are not effective for weight loss. Higher doses may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity, especially when given with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects, or appetite suppression.
    • Before you begin treatment with Adthyza, talk to your doctor about:
      • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
      • Your allergies
      • Your current health problems and past medical history
      • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
    • Adthyza should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular problems, including chest pain and in those who are elderly due to the risk of heart disease.
    • Adthyza should be used with caution in diabetic patients and in patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency.
    • The sensitivity to oral blood thinners is affected by thyroid problems. Blood tests should be monitored in patients with thyroid issues who are taking oral blood thinners.

    Side Effects

Therapeutic overdosage of Adthyza can lead to hyperthyroidism. However, other side effects may also occur. Immediately inform your doctor of side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
