Description
Accuretic is made up of two medications: an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I), quinapril, and a thiazide diuretic, hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). The Accuretic generic is quinapril HCl/hydrochlorothiazide. This combination drug is used to treat high blood pressure; however, it should not be used as initial therapy.
Accuretic oral tablets come in the following strengths:
- 10 mg quinapril/12.5 mg HCTZ
- 20 mg quinapril/12.5 mg HCTZ
- 20 mg quinapril/25 mg HCTZ

Directions
Take Accuretic as your doctor has prescribed. If any questions or concerns arise, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
The dose of Accuretic is generally 10 mg quinapril/12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide to 80 mg quinapril/50 mg hydrochlorothiazide by mouth once daily.
Your doctor may adjust your dose depending on your tolerance and response to the medication.
Ingredients
Accuretic contains quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide.
Inactive ingredients include candelilla wax, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, lactose, magnesium carbonate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, povidone, and titanium dioxide.
Contraindications
Do not take Accuretic if you are allergic to quinapril, hydrochlorothiazide, or any other ACE-I or if you've had angioedema (swelling underneath the skin) with other ACE-Is in the past.
Do not take Accuretic if you are allergic to sulfa medications or if your kidneys are not producing urine.
Do not take Accuretic with a neprilysin inhibitor like sacubitril. You should wait at least 36 hours of switching to or from sacubitril/valsartan before taking Accuretic.
Diabetic patients should not take Accuretic with aliskiren.
Cautions
There is a FDA Boxed Warning against the use of Accuretic during pregnancy as the drug can harm or cause death in a developing fetus.
- Before you begin treatment with Accuretic, talk to your doctor about:
- All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, as Accuretic can interact with certain medications, including lithium, dioxin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Your allergies
- Your medical history and health problems
- Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
- Accuretic may cause angioedema (swelling underneath the skin) of the face, legs, arms, lips, tongue, or throat. If this occurs, seek medical care immediately.
- Patients who undergo desensitizing treatment with Hymenoptera venom and are taking Accuretic may develop serious allergic reactions.
- Dialysis patients who are dialyzed with high-flux membranes and are taking Accuretic may develop serious allergic reactions.
- Although rare, Accuretic may cause serious liver problems that can be fatal. Seek medical care right away if you develop yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
- Accuretic is used to treat high blood pressure, and therefore, can cause low blood pressure that may be symptomatic. Patients should monitor their blood pressure regularly.
- Accuretic can cause kidney problems.
- Rarely, Accuretic can cause abnormal white blood cell counts and depression of the bone marrow. Patients with kidney problems, lupus, or scleroderma may be at higher risk.
- Accuretic may worsen or cause lupus.
- Accuretic may cause acute-closure glaucoma. The risk is greater in patients with a sulfa or penicillin allergy.
- High or low potassium levels, low sodium levels, and low magnesium levels can occur with the use of Accuretic.
- Cholesterol, triglyceride, and uric acid levels can increase with the use of Accuretic.
- Accuretic can cause a nonproductive cough.
Side Effects
Accuretic can cause side effects such as cough, headache, dizziness, fatigue, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, back pain, and diarrhea.
If you develop side effects that bother you or won't go away, contact your doctor immediately.
