Description
Accrufer is an orally administered iron replacement therapy that contains ferric maltol. Ferric maltol is a complex that pairs iron in a stable ferric form with maltol, a sugar-derived molecule, making it easier for the body to absorb iron without breaking it down too quickly. Classified as an iron supplement, Accrufer effectively treats individuals with iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia (IDA).

Directions
The standard dosage of Accrufer is 30 mg twice daily on an empty stomach. Swallow the capsule whole, without chewing or breaking it, to maintain the integrity of the drug release mechanism. It's advisable to take Accrufer on an empty stomach, ideally at least one hour before or two hours after a meal, to improve absorption.
Individuals should be consistent with their dosing times each day to maintain steady iron levels. It is important to continue the treatment as per the healthcare provider's instructions, and not to discontinue using Accrufer without consulting the prescribing professional, even if there's noticeable improvement in symptoms.
Ingredients
The active ingredient is Ferric Maltol.
Contraindications
Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:
- Allergy: Patients with a known hypersensitivity to Ferric Maltol or any components of the Accrufer formulation should not take this medication. Reactions may include itching, rash, or more severe responses.
- Iron overload syndromes: If a patient has conditions that cause excessive iron accumulation, such as hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis, Accrufer is not appropriate.
- Blood transfusions: Recent receipt of repeated blood transfusions may result in sufficient or excessive iron levels, making additional iron supplementation unnecessary or harmful.
Cautions
- Before beginning treatment with Accrufer, it's important to discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
- Your current health conditions
- Any allergies you may have
- All medications you are currently using
- Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you have active inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, avoid using Accrufer as it might worsen inflammation in your gastrointestinal tract.
- Excessive use of iron supplements like Accrufer can lead to an overload of iron in your body, which can be harmful. Make sure not to use Accrufer if you already have high levels of iron or are receiving intravenous iron therapy.
- Always check your iron levels before starting Accrufer and keep monitoring them during treatment to avoid too much iron buildup.
- Keep Accrufer out of reach of children. Iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or poison control center immediately.
Side Effects
Accrufer typically causes mild digestive issues. Common side effects include gas, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain. You might also notice discolored stools, nausea, vomiting, or discomfort and bloating in the stomach area. These side effects are generally manageable and often resolve over time as your body adjusts to the medication.
Accrufer can also lead to more severe issues. There is an increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease flare-ups, so it is advised not to take Accrufer if you are experiencing an IBD flare. Iron overload is another serious risk; your healthcare provider will monitor your iron levels before and during treatment to manage this risk effectively. Additionally, Accrufer poses a significant risk of overdose if accidentally ingested by children, making it crucial to store the medication securely and out of reach of young ones. If you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
