What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

RELPAX (Eletriptan) is a medication prescribed to treat an acute migraine headache with or without aura in adults. An aura is a complex of symptoms that precede a migraine headache and may include flashing lights, blind spots, or changes in the visual field.

RELPAX (Eletriptan) works by agonizing serotonin receptors in the brain. Migraines occur because blood vessels in the cranium relax (vasodilate), and release chemical signals that increase the sensation of pain. By binding to serotonin receptors, RELPAX (Eletriptan) contracts these same blood vessels and prevents the release of chemical signals that cause pain.

    Directions

Take the RELPAX dosage exactly as prescribed by your doctor. RELPAX dosage may vary from person to person.

Take between 20 mg and 40 mg at the first onset of aura symptoms, before the start of the migraine headache. If a single dose does not alleviate symptoms, you may repeat another dose two hours later as needed.

Do not take more than 80 mg in a 24 hour period.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in RELPAX is eletriptan hydrobromide. Eletriptan is also the name for RELPAX generic.

    Cautions

Use RELPAX with caution if you have a history of cardiovascular disease like coronary artery disease of coronary artery vasospasm.

Do not take RELPAX with other triptan medications (5-HT agonists) or ergotamine-containing medication as they may increase the likelihood of rebound headache.

Speak with your doctor if you have a history of stroke (cardiovascular accident), transient ischemic attack (TIA), or basilar migraine.

Use RELPAX with caution if you have a history of other vascular diseases like peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or uncontrolled hypertension.

    Side Effects

Some of the more common adverse reactions when taking RELPAX may include:

    • Cerebrovascular events
    • Heart arrhythmias
    • Hypertension
    • Medication overuse headache (rebound headache)
    • Prinzmetal's angina
    • Tightness in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw
