What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

    Description

RANEXA (Ranolazine ER) is a medication prescribed to treat chronic angina. Angina is a cardiovascular disease where certain arteries in the heart do not receive enough oxygen. People with angina have a higher risk of cardiac cell death and heart attack. Symptoms of angina include dizziness, fatigue, sweating, shortness of breath, and tightness and pain in the chest.

It is unclear how RANEXA treats symptoms of angina. However, RANEXA is known to slow the movement of sodium ions through certain heart muscle cells. RANEXA does not decrease the heart rate or lower blood pressure.

    Directions

Most patients start by taking one RANEXA 500 mg tablet twice daily. The dosage can be increased to 1000 mg twice daily based on symptoms and side effects.

    Ingredients

The active ingredient in RANEXA is ranolazine extended-release (ER). RANEXA generic is called Ranolazine ER.

    Cautions

RANEXA is known to prolong the QT interval, which is a measurement of the electrical conductivity of the heart. When combined with other drugs that prolong the QT interval, RANEXA can increase the potential for Torsades de Pointes (TdP), a potentially fatal heart arrhythmia. Your QT interval should be monitored while taking RANEXA.

RANEXA has the potential for drug interactions with many medications. Review your medication list with your doctor and pharmacist before starting RANEXA or any new medications.

    Side Effects

The most common adverse effects of RANEXA include:

    • Abdominal pain
    • Bradycardia
    • Constipation
    • Dizziness
    • Dry mouth
    • Dyspnea
    • Headache
    • Hypotension
    • Nausea
    • Orthostatic hypotension
    • Palpitations
    • Peripheral edema
    • Tinnitus
    • Vertigo
    • Vomiting
