It's that time of the year again; the time where everyone makes their new year's resolutions. If one of your resolutions is to lose some weight, you are a large group of people with the same goal. Whether it's just a few pounds gained over the holiday season that you want to drop, or more that you have gained over the years, there are a few suggestions we have that may help you in your journey towards your goal. The two main areas in their lives that people focus making changes in are their diet and fitness.



  • Eat small balanced meals and snacks. If you skip meals, you are likely to be starving once you do eat, and that is a recipe for over-eating. Make sure that you have three balanced meals, and healthy snacks in between.

  • Cut down on your calorie intake. Try to eliminate high calorie low nutrient foods from your diet. Fried foods and desserts should be substituted with something a little more substantial such as fresh salads and fresh fruit. Take the time to do some research on recipes that you will find enjoyable and that are healthy for you. If you try to make too many changes at once, and try too many foods that you are not used to or may not enjoy, it will be easier to cheat on your diet.

  • Drink lots of water. Most people do not drink enough water in a day. The average person needs eight to ten glasses of water a day. It is easy to confuse the body's message that it needs water, with hunger. Anytime you get hungry, drink a glass of water first before reaching for food. You may find that you no longer need a snack after replenishing your fluids, or that you are not as hungry as you thought and a smaller snack will do the trick.


  • Add exercise gradually. If you are not used to many physical activities, you should be very careful when adding exercise to your daily routine. You need to give your muscles time to adapt and become accustomed to the new stresses being placed on them. Start slowly by taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, by parking in the farthest stall from the door, or by taking each dish back to the kitchen separately instead of all together.

  • Pick something that you like! If you try to go the gym three times a week, but it's not something that you really enjoy, it will make the challenge even harder for you. If you pick an activity that you enjoy, then you are more likely to meet your goal, and have a good time too! If you don't have an activity that you really like, then this is the perfect time for you to try a new one, and meet new people at the same time!
