Sometimes it's hard to motivate yourself to quit smoking when it has become such a big part of your life. Excuses are always easy to find to delay that big step: "I'll do it next month", "now's not a good time, I'll do it after the big project is done". It is never hard to find a reason when you are looking for one. To motivate you, we have come up with reasons for why you shouldn't put it off any longer!

Researchers have found over 4,000 different chemicals in tobacco and the tobacco smoke. More than 60 of these are know to be cancer causing! Here is a list of a few of the ingredients and their normal use:

  • Tar: this contains a mixture of chemicals that include formaldehyde, arsenic and cyanide. When inhaled, roughly 70% of the tar remains in your lungs.
  • Carbon monoxide: this is a poisonous gas that replaces the oxygen in your system. Up to 15% of your oxygen may be replaced by this gas, making it harder to breath, and your heart work harder to provide oxygen to your body.
  • Acetone: this is the main ingredient in nail polish removers.
  • Cadmium: this metal is poisonous and is used in batteries.
  • Shellac: when you combine this item with alcohol, it can be used as a wood varnish.

There are many side-effects of smoking, and they can be physical, social and financial, we have listed just a few of many examples:
  • Physical
    • Shortness of breath and wheezing
    • Damaged taste buds and stained teeth
    • Dull skin, broken capillaries and nicotine-stained fingers
    • Reduced fertility, risky pregnancy
    • Increased risk of lung cancer, emphysema
    • Increased risk of stroke and heart attacks

  • Social
    • The smell of tobacco in your clothing can be too strong for some people
    • Smoking is now banned from many public places and is becoming more and more of a social stigma

  • Financial
    • If you saved all the money your currently spend on cigarettes, you could save hundreds to thousands of dollars each year that you could spend on other items. At today's rates, a pack-a-day smoker will spend $15,250 over the next 5 years.

Everybody's reason for quitting is different. We recommend that you make a list of why you want to quit, and keep it with you as a reminder. Anytime you feel your determination start to waiver, take the list out as a reminder of why you are doing this.
